Animal Power
At the crux of the low-impact restorative approach are the the Suffolk draft horse and the mechanical log arch. The Suffolk is the only heavy horse breed specifically bred for agricultural purposes. An easy, tractable disposition and efficient anatomical conformation make the Suffolk an ideal choice for working in the woods. The log arch, is a chariot-like wheeled platform that gives the teamster better perspective and a place, and more importantly lifts the front of the log which reduces soil disturbance and makes the work easier for the horses. Used in tandem, the animals and log arch provide the elegance and maneuverability needed to safeguard the health of the residual stand and limit soil compaction. And unlike machines horses are essentially self-repairing, self-replacing, solar powered, and they fertilize the woods. |
