British Airways plc (BA) have been operating for over 90 years and are one of the most well-known airline carriers throughout the world. The flag carrier of the United Kingdom, this full service global airline can trace its origins back to the birth of flight. They boast an ability to move with the times through nearly 100 years of civil aviation, as air travel has changed beyond all recognition from tandem wings and wooden propellers to jet engines and in-flight entertainment.

Today, with one of the biggest fleets in Britain, their number of international flights with over 300 destinations worldwide and with an extensive global route network flying to and from centrally-located airports; they are considered the largest airline in the UK. Their main hub is at London’s principal and busiest airport, Heathrow, with their headquarters close by in Waterside.

The nationalisation of large airlines; British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways Corporation (BEA) plus regional airlines; Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines, led to the formation of the British Airways Group in 1974. These companies were dissolved and taken into public ownership by the UK Government. BA were privatised 13 years later in 1987 and quickly expanded through the acquisitions of popular UK carriers; British Caledonian and Dan-Air. They are also one of the founding members, along with four other major airlines, of the second largest carrier coalition; the oneworld airline alliance.

British Airways have a strong fleet of Boeing aircraft from their main 747 series 400’s to 777-200’s and 767-300’s for their long haul flights, the 757-200’s and 737-400’s for short haul European and UK domestic flights, along with a large contingent of the Airbus family of aircraft for short haul routes. They, along with Air France, were the only airlines that operated a turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner, known as Concorde. Concorde flew regular transatlantic flights from 1976 to 2003 out of London Heathrow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle to New York’s JFK and Washington Dulles airports; transporting passengers in practically half the time of other carrier aircraft.
